Untangling the Wire (Fantasy Football 2022 - Week 9)

Week 8 was a scoring bonanza. The number of players with multi-touchdown games was incredible unless you were against a team that completely demolished you. Then it might not have been that much fun.

In the past couple of weeks, I have been trying to arm you with players who are not yet busting out weekly. I keep pounding the drum for Jaguars pass catchers because the easiest part of their schedule is just coming up. I am already looking down the road at fantasy playoff schedules and will start talking about those more in-depth after Week 9. This is the time to start planning for those three weeks.

I hope you all had a happy and amazing Halloween. Now let’s get on to this week’s Waiver Additions.

NOTE: If you are new here, this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Justin Fields

It gets you here with 151 passing yards, two touchdowns, 60 rushing yards, and a touchdown against the Cowboys, who are one of the toughest defenses against quarterbacks. His next three matchups are against the bottom five defenses against quarterbacks: Dolphins (fifth easiest), the Lions (fourth easiest), and the Falcons (second easiest).

NOTE: I would add Fields if I have space on my bench, even if I don’t need him. He looks like he is bursting at the seem with fantasy goodness right now.

Marcus Mariota

Mariota has a rushing upside, but I wouldn’t call him a Konami Code QB. He has not passed much, but he has a pretty easy schedule down the stretch, including a super easy fantasy playoff schedule.

Other quarterbacks to consider if you are desperate:

  • Taylor Heinicke – 279 yards passing, TD, 29 yards + a rushing TD.
  • Andy Dalton – 229 yards passing, 2 TDs Raven is up next.
  • Jimmy Garoppolo – 235 yards passing, 2 TDs, super easy schedule rest of season. Bye is Week 9.

NOTE: I only have Jimmy G as someone to consider, as he has a bye in Week 9. I think he is the priority add at quarterback after Fields. With QB play being down this year, he should already be rostered in most leagues.

Tyler Allgeier

He is someone that probably should be rostered in your league, but if he isn’t, you need to add him. Double-digit fantasy scores the past two weeks. The Falcons have an easy schedule against the run for the next five weeks. He plays 60% of the snaps as the lead back in this running back by committee. If you need a bye-week fill-in, he is your guy.

Jaylen Warren

He is on bye in Week 9. He had six carries for 50 yards rushing and three receptions for 25 yards receiving. He gets roughly a third of the snaps but looks more effective than Najee. His role may grow; he is more of a speculative add.

Other running backs to consider if you are desperate:

  • Nyheim Hines – 20 yards rushing, TD, two targets, two receptions, and 29 receiving yards.
  • Dontrell Hilliard – 83 yards rushing, one target, one reception, and 12 receiving yards.
  • Latavius Murray – 46 Yards, TD, two targets, one reception, and 13 receiving yards.

Wide Receivers

Joshua Palmer

Mike Williams is out. Palmer is essentially his direct backup. To top it off, the Chargers will play the Falcons in Week 9. Palmer already had 16% of the target share this season. He produces when he gets the targets; in the three games he has had eight or more targets this season, he has had double-digit fantasy scores. He is a very nice addition if you need wide receiver help right now.

Romeo Doubs

Is this addition by subtraction? I mean the subtraction of other wide receivers. In Week 8, he had seven targets, four receptions, 62 yards, and a touchdown. For the next three weeks, the schedule is pretty straightforward. I like him as an add if you need wide receiver help.

Zay Jones

Jones is back in the lineup and healthy. The Jaguars have five straight games against defenses that give up many fantasy points to wide receivers. The passing game for the Jaguars will most likely come back alive during this stint. It is a smorgasbord of fantasy goodness for the next five games.

Other wide receivers to consider:

  • Kalif Raymond – 4 targets, three receptions, 76 yards
  • Garrett Wilson – 7 targets, six receptions, 115 yards
  • Mack Hollins – 8 targets, seven receptions, 64 yards

Tight Ends

Evan Engram

This is the third week in a row Engram is mentioned here. Again, Engram sees consistent targets in the Jaguar passing game. In Week 7, he had seven targets for four receptions and 67 yards, and in Week 8, he had six targets for four receptions, 55 yards, and a touchdown. Once again, this passing offense will be opening soon as the schedule becomes more manageable. So grab him for a lovely floor at a tight end for the next six weeks.

Greg Dulcich

Dulcich had a touchdown in Week 6. He followed that up in Week 7 with nine targets, six receptions, and 51 yards. In Week 8, he had five targets which he turned into four receptions and 87 yards. This is a trend; he is everything people want Albert O-whatever his name is to be.

Isaiah Likely

Mark Andrews left the Ravens’ Week 8 game with a shoulder injury. Likely filled in nicely with seven targets which he turned into six receptions, 77 yards, and a touchdown.

Other tight ends to consider:

  • Tyler Conklin – 10 targets, six receptions, 79 yards.
  • Robert Tonyan – 6 targets, five receptions, 35 yards.
