Untangling the Waiver Wire (Fantasy Football 2022 – Week 14)

As you go through this week’s column, if you see a team name with a ranking like second or first in parenthesis next to the team name. That is the ranking of that team against the position of the player I am writing about. So, for example, if you read Titans (2nd), the Titans give up the second most fantasy points to that player’s position.

This way, you can see who has perfect schedules for the remainder of the season and the fantasy playoffs.

If you are still with me, you are probably making the playoffs, and this information will help you make it to the finals. At least, it will help you make it deep into the money rounds.

May your Waiver Wire Dreams come true tonight!

NOTE: If you are new here, this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Jared Goff

In Week 13, Goff threw 340 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars. However, the Lions will be playing the Vikings in Week 14. The Vikings have given up 300 yards or multiple touchdowns to quarterbacks in 7 straight games. So Goff is your guy if you want a streaming option in Week 14.

Mike White

I wrote about Mike in last week’s article. In Week 12, he threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns. In Week 13, he threw for 369 yards and ran for 7 yards and a touchdown. The Jets play the Bills in week 14, so you may not want to think about playing White then, but the Jets’ fantasy playoff schedule is insanely awesome. The Lions in Week 15, the Jaguars in Week 16, and the Seahawks in Week 17.

Other quarterbacks to consider if you are desperate:

  • Tyler Huntly – Lamar Jackson got hurt; the schedule is excellent.
  • Brock Purdy – 210 yards, 2 TDs; Jimmy Garoppolo is done for the year.

Running Backs

James Cook

The usage for Cook went way up in Week 13. The Bills rookie had 14 carries for 64 yards. He also saw six targets which he turned into six receptions and 41 yards. He will get the time and touches in this offense that appears to be running the ball more now. I will be looking to add him where I can.

Zonovan Knight

He was in this column last week. I added him to many teams. He filled up the stat sheet in Week 13 with 15 carries and 90 yards rushing, and five receptions for 28 yards receiving. The Jets said they would use him more, and they did. It’s never a wrong time to add a starting running back to your team. The Jets have a tough matchup with the Bills in Week 14, but then they get the Lions, the Jaguars, and the Seahawks in the fantasy playoffs.

Cam Akers

The Rams tricked me, as I wrote about Kyren Williams here last week, then Cam Akers shows he is the lead back in Week 13. Akers ran with the ball 17 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns. The Rams’ schedule is very friendly if you are needy at running back. The Raiders, Packers, and Chargers are all on the upcoming slate. The only challenging game is the Bills in Week 16.

Other running backs to consider if you are desperate:

  • Ty Johnson – 1 carry, 3 yards, TD, seven targets, six receptions, 38 yards.
  • Jerick McKinnon – 8 Carries, 51 yards, two targets, two receptions, 9 yards, TD.

Wide Receivers

Corey Davis

You can get Davis here with ten targets, five receptions, and 85 yards. He had an 18% target share that was second on the team behind Garrett Wilson. He looks healthy. He is involved. The schedule is one where the Jets will be throwing, yes, even against the Bills. The Jets need to get wins to get into the playoffs.

Nico Collins

He has nine or more targets in 3 of the last four games. Double-digit fantasy scores in 3 out of those four games as well. In the other game, he scored nine fantasy points. So he has a nice floor. In Week 13, he saw ten targets which he turned into three receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown. That isn’t great. But the volume and the floor are high. Also, The Texans play the Chiefs (7th) and the Titans (2nd) in the first two rounds of the fantasy playoffs. Then, they play the Jaguars in Week 17. So there is potential for him to help you if you lost a WR to injury.

Michael Gallup

Gallup finally looked good. It has taken him some time to come back from his injury. In Week 13, he had seven targets which he turned into four receptions for 23 yards and two touchdowns. The schedule is a little challenging until Fantasy Championship week when the Cowboys play the Titans (2nd). But Gallup plays in a good offense with a good quarterback. The Cowboys will be competing for playoff seeding for the rest of the season, so they will be trying to win every game.

Other wide receivers to consider:

  • Demarcus Robinson – 8 targets, seven receptions, 41 yards.
  • Devin Duvernay – 2 carries, 9 yards, 6 Targets, six receptions, 34 yards.
  • Jahan Dotson – 9 Targets, five receptions, 54 yards, TD.

NOTE: With Lamar Jackson hurt, Huntley took over at QB for the Ravens. There was a lot more pocket passing happening for Robinson and Duvernay. The Ravens also have a very easy schedule the rest of the way. Steelers week 14 (rank 1 in fantasy points for WRs), Browns (14th), Falcons (4th), and Steelers (1st) again.

Tight Ends

Hunter Henry

The Cardinals (1st), the Raiders (7th), the Bengals (16th), and the Dolphins (3rd). Where the teams rank in fantasy points allowed to opposing teams’ tight ends is in parenthesis. This schedule is super easy for a tight end. The Patriots will be playing to try and make the playoffs.

Money Makers and Heart Breakers Week 13

Friends are essential, very important to me. Doing things you like to do with friends is always a good thing. When we first met, one of my friends told me he could tell my fantasy analysis was a labor of love because it was also for him. So this week, my friend Chris Robin and I are doing our yearly team-up articles. Chris writes for team Rise or Fall; here is a link to his Bottom of the Barrel Quarterback article for this week. You will find some blurbs from me in there as well.

It’s always a pleasure working and interacting with Chris. Just an overall great guy,

Are you ready for some football?

If you are new here, this column can be used to help you handle some sit/start questions you might have, but its primary purpose is to take you through the main DFS slate weekly with players that will make you money and players that will break your heart.

Here is a brief definition of each of my terms for anyone that might be new:

💰 Money Maker – This player will perform better than expectations

💔 Heart Breaker – This player will perform lower than expectations

💰 Money Makers

Quarterbacks

Jalen Hurts

In Week 12, Hurts played against the Packers, who are pretty tough against quarterbacks for fantasy purposes. Hurts threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 157 yards. He destroyed the Packers’ defense, finishing as the QB2 for the week. In Week 13, the Eagles play the Titans. The Titans give up the sixth most points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Quarterbacks average 286 yards and two touchdowns passing against the Titans. They have given up 20 touchdowns to Quarterbacks on the season. Jalen will lay a hurtin’ on the Titans in Week 13.

Trevor Lawrence

In Week 13, the Jaguars are playing the Lions. The Lions give up the most points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. On top of that, the game has a higher over-under of 51.5 points. The Lions give up an average of 271 yards and two TDs weekly to quarterbacks. Quarterbacks have scored a total of 24 touchdowns against the Lions. Lawrence is coming off 321 yards and three touchdown game against the Ravens. This will be a fun game.

Mike White

It lit the world on fire, looking like the second coming of Patrick Mahomes in Week 12. But instead, the Jets benched Zack Wilson, and White threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, reviving the Jets’ passing game. The funny thing is the matchup for White is even better in Week 13. He gets to play against the Vikings, who give up the 9th most points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. So it will be a White out for the Jets’ passing game in a good way.

Running Backs

Nick Chubb

The Texans give up the most fantasy points to running backs. Every week a running back has double-digit fantasy points against this defense. Chubb is Chubb. He has double-digit fantasy scores in all but two games this season. The Texans give up 5.2 yards per carry, and Chubb averages 5.2 yards per carry. This is like a match made in heaven. Chubb is currently the RB4 on the season. The Texans have given up double-digit fantasy scores to running backs in only one week this season. That is 10 out of 11 games played. Chubb is going to EXPLODE this week.

$8,000 on DraftKings
$9,600 on Fanduel

Aaron Jones

The Packers play the Bears in Week 13. The Bears give up the 5th most fantasy points to opposing teams running backs. How bad are they? Zonovan Knight scored double-digit fantasy points against them in Week 12. Who? Zonovan Knight, yeah, I know. They played in Week 2. A-A-Ron eviscerated the Bears’ defense for 132 yards, a touchdown rushing, three receptions, 38 yards, and another touchdown receiving. Jones plays 70% of the snaps at running back. Jones averages 5.2 yards per carry. He also has a 14% target share, is third on the team in targets, and second on the team in receptions. BOOM, Jones scores epic fantasy points this week.

$7,400 on Fanduel

Dameon Pierce

Mike: The last two weeks, Pierce was horrible. Those were against two top-ten defenses against the run. In Week 13, he is playing against the Browns. The Browns give the second most fantasy points to opposing teams running backs. Running backs averaged 166 yards and a touchdown weekly against this defense. Even Eric Ingold had a double-digit fantasy day against the Browns. Who is Eric Ingold, you ask? My answer is exactly. I’ll wait while you look Knight and Ingold up. Anyways Pierce will right the ship in an easy matchup this week. His price is right too!

Chris: Back-to-back weeks of literally nothing from Mr. Pierce. For the second straight week, the Texans fell behind super-fast! Usually, a negative game script in DFS terms can be flipped into a positive thing. Well, that was a huge failure! Pierce is still getting in his work and has had 20 total touches in the last two weeks. I am not worried about the fantasy points and DFS goodness Dameon will or will not provide us. Oddly, folks have tossed him aside after the last few weeks! So let’s stay the course here, at home, against a soft Browns DST. He should be good for around 16-17 carries, 80+ yards, and 3 to 4 receptions for another 20 yards.

$5,900 on DraftKings
$6,500 on Fanduel

D’Andre Swift

Chris: Is it time to face that Swift isn’t that stud workhorse RB1? That’s not a bad thing! Given his propensity for being in and out of the lineup, hurt or sore, I think this new role is perfect! Let fellow RB Jamaal Williams carry the ball 15+ times a game while Swift sees his 6 to 7 rushing attempts. On a per-touch basis, D’Andre is electric! On a per-target basis, D’Andre is a star! Oh, and in the meantime, his price tag stays low across the board as folks fade based on the “lack of work.” Fine by me, especially this week against a Jaguars team giving up 21.09 points a game. The Detroit Lions are also scoring around 25 points per game. So the scene is set for Detroit to hang 30+ points on Sunday, and I am willing to bet Swift is responsible for 75 all-purpose yards and a touchdown.

$6,400 on Fanduel

JaMycal Hasty & Darrell Henderson

JaMycal Hasty was shockingly good after starting RB Travis Etienne Jr. hurt his foot in Week 12. Hasty carried the ball 12 times for 28 yards and caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown! As it stands now, Travis has been able to practice this week, albeit walkthrough-type stuff, but as their franchise guy, Jacksonville would be wise to let the kid chill and fully heal. If that is the case, I love JaMycal in DFS formats on Sunday. However, if Etienne Jr. does sit, the Jaguars may also look to get Darrell Henderson Jr. more involved. As a result, I have Hasty around 5-6 carries, 25-30 yards, and several receptions for another 15 yards.

Wide Receivers

Amon-Ra St. Brown

The Detroit Lions play the Jaguars in week 13. I do believe I already mentioned the over-under is 51.5 for this game. I said that you could pass on the Lions; well, you can also pass on the Jaguars. The Jags give the 9th most fantasy points to opposing teams’ wide receivers. Fourteen wide receivers have scored touchdowns against the Jags, and fourteen wide receivers have had double-digit fantasy scores against the Jaguars.

Meanwhile, St. Brown has a 28% target share, 75% catch rate, and 24% air yards share of the Lions’ passing game. He has double-digit fantasy scores in four out of the last five games. In Week 12, he had nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown against a tough Bears defense. Amon-Ra is HOT; after all, he is the sun god.

$7,100 on DraftKings
$8,000 on Fanduel

Tee Higgins

Higgins has double-digit fantasy scores in four of the last five games. Since Week 10, Higgins has had a 30% target share and 49% air yards share with a 73% catch rate. He is getting massive volume in targets and for large quantities of yards. This week he plays against the Chiefs. The Chiefs give the seventh most fantasy points to opposing teams’ wide receivers. I wrote about him here last week, and he delivered; I expect him to return this week. Higgins is going to Tee off.

$7,200 on DraftKings
$8,300 on Fanduel

Garett Wilson

The Jets passing game looked alive with Mike White at the helm. I don’t think anyone benefited more from the change at quarterback than Wilson. In Week 12, Wilson had eight receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Well, it gets even better because, in Week 13, the Jets play the Vikings. The Vikings give up the 5th most fantasy points to opposing teams’ wide receivers. The wide receiver position averages 15 receptions, 198 yards, and a touchdown per week against the Vikings’ defense. Time for takeoff; buckle up.

Tight Ends

George Kittle

Miami gives the third most fantasy points to opposing teams’ tight ends. Tight ends averaged six receptions and 59 yards against the Dolphins. Two weeks ago, when the Niners played another Bottom team at defending tight ends, the Cardinals, Kittle had a great game. He had four receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins don’t defend the position any better than the Cardinals. Kittle is third on the team in targets and second on the team in receiving touchdowns. This will be a great week to roll him out in DFS.

$5,000 on DraftKings
$6,200 on Fanduel

Foster Moreau

Since Waller was sent to IR, Moreau has 100% snap share. In Week 12 against the Seahawks, who give up the second most fantasy points to opposing teams’ tight ends, Moreau had seven targets which he turned into three receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown. That was a 19% target share. In Week 13, the Raiders play the Chargers. The Chargers give the fifth most points to opposing teams’ tight ends. I did what I said I would if you read Bottom of the Barrel.

💔Heart Breakers

Quarter Backs

Lamar Jackson

The Broncos give the second-fewest fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Jackson has averaged about 15 fantasy points a game when playing teams that defend the quarterback position well. Now, with that said, you are playing him in season-long leagues but not in DFS. Only one quarterback has hit 20 fantasy points against this defense. The Broncos are tough on this side of the ball.

DeShaun Watson

The Texans give up the second least amount of points to quarterbacks in fantasy. Only two quarterbacks have scored more than 20 fantasy points against them this season. That is because of two things. Game script and the fact that they give up the most average yards per carry in the league at 5.2. Nick Chubb will run over this team, allowing Watson to hang loose and get the rust off.

Ryan Tannehill

The Eagles give up the fewest points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Not a single quarterback has scored more than 17 fantasy points against them. That is what we call a trend. A trend that will most likely continue this week. I had Tanny as a heartbreaker last week, too, he didn’t make me a liar then, and he won’t know. I need a bucket for this one.

Running Backs

Alvin Kamara

I wrote about Kamara last week as a heartbreaker too. The Saints play the Buccaneers in Week 13. The Buccaneers are the third toughest team against running backs. Kamara has been just ok when playing top 10 defenses against running backs this season. This means you play him in season-long leagues and hope for the best, and you expect not so much. In DFS, avoid him. His over-under, for me, is ten fantasy points, and I think he has to get a touchdown to get the over.

NOTE: I just changed the week and name of the team for Kamara from last week’s Heart Breaker. He scored four fantasy points last week. YUCK

Devin Singletary

The Bills play the Patriots in Week 13. The Patriots are the second toughest team against running backs. They haven’t given up a double-digit fantasy score to a running back since Week 7. I play Singletary in season-long leagues where I have to, but I am not optimistic about it. Complete fade in DFS. I have to brush my teeth just thinking about this one.

Jeff Wilson Jr.

The Dolphins play the Niners in Week 13. The Niners have passed the Patriots as the most challenging team for running backs to get fantasy points against. I don’t care about any Jeff Wilson revenge game narratives. The Dolphins will pass and pass some more. Maybe Wilson can get ten fantasy points, but only three running backs have this season against the Niners.

Wide Receivers

Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs is Stefon Diggs, and I would play him in a season-long league. If the Patriots try to take away a wide receiver, it will be Diggs, so that I would avoid him in DFS. The Patriots’ defense gives up the 6th fewest fantasy points to wide receivers. This feels like a Gabe Davis or Isaiah McKenzie game.

Amari Cooper

I already wrote about the Texans being tough against quarterbacks. Well, they also give up the 5th fewest points to wide receivers. I say coaching matters, and play calling/game script matters. The Browns will run and run and run some more on the Texans because a toddler could run on the Texans.

Terry McLaurin

The Giants are one of the toughest teams against wide receivers. On top of that, McLaurin has been average for the past two weeks. I wouldn’t say I like the matchup, and I don’t like the current usage. Don’t even be a contrarian for GPP plays; avoid this guy everywhere.

Tight Ends

Daniel Bellinger

The Giants play the Commanders in Week 13. The Commanders give up the second-fewest fantasy points to opposing teams’ tight ends. I have read about people getting excited for Bellinger to come back. He will be a little rusty; the matchup is terrible. How bad is the matchup? Not a single tight end has scored more than 11 points against the Commanders this season, and only two have scored ten or more. I command you to get me a bucket.

Robert Tonyan

The Bears are tough on the tight end position. Only two tight ends have broken 10 points against the Bears this season. Tonyan managed two receptions for 11 yards against the Bears in Week 2. The Packers will run the damn ball on the Bears. The is nothing to see here.

NOTE: This season tight end is the worst it has ever been.

Good luck this week!

Untangling the Waiver Wire (Fantasy Football 2022 – Week 13)

You are probably in contention in your league if you are still reading this. Congratulations, as lots of people, are falling off now and out of playoff contention. I am trying to include who also has easy schedules in the playoffs with my player notes in this article so you can evaluate who makes the most sense for your specific teams out of who I recommend adding.

Good luck as we get closer to the playoffs!

May your Waiver Wire Dreams come true tonight!

NOTE: If you are new here, this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Mike White

In Week 12, Mike threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns. In Week 13, the Jets play the Vikings, and the Vikings give up the 9th most fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. I am interested in adding White, as the Jets’ fantasy playoff schedule is insanely awesome. The Lions in Week 15, the Jaguars in Week 16, and the Seahawks in Week 17.

Other quarterbacks to consider if you are desperate:

  • Mac Jones – 382 yards, two touchdowns, four bottom-10 defenses against QBs coming
  • Jared Goff – 240 yards, two touchdowns, Jaguars and Vikings next two weeks.

Running Backs

JaMycal Hasty

Travis Etienne left the Week 12 game with a foot injury. JaMycal had only 28 yards rushing, but he had five targets for five receptions, 67 yards, and a receiving touchdown. He is at least a speculative add if Etienne is out. So make haste and add Hasty now! Detroit is up next.

Kyren Williams

Williams played 70% of the snaps in Week 12. He had 11 carries for 35 yards. He also had three targets for three receptions and 25 yards. This may be a waiver pickup if you are desperate. He got the snaps over Akers, and Henderson is gone. It looks like the Rams want to see what they have in Williams.

Other running backs to consider if you are desperate:

  • Ty Johnson – 5 carries, 62 yards, TD, 2 targets, 1 reception for 16 yards
  • Zonovan Knight – 14 carries, 69 yards, 3 targets, 3 receptions for 34 yards
  • Benny Snell – 12 carries, 62 yards, TD, 1 target, 1 reception, 6 yards

NOTE: Zonovan Knight (Who?) is 0% rostered on Yahoo. It looks like Michael Carter may miss time, and Knight fits the Jets’ style of play. Also, need to check on the status of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren as the week progresses. Snell may not end up being the guy for the Steelers.

Wide Receivers

Zay Jones

Broke out in Week 12 with 14 targets, 11 receptions, and 145 yards. The Jaguars play the Lions and the Titans in the next two games. They are both bottom five at defending wide receivers. In the past two games, Jones has seen 24 targets, which he turned into 19 receptions and 213 total yards. He had a 38% target share in Week 12. Combine the small passing tree of Jones and Christian Kirk with the excellent matchup next two weeks, and you get some serious fantasy goodness.

Treylon Burks

In Week 11, he had seven receptions in 111 yards. In Week 12, he had six targets which he turned into four receptions and 70 yards. He also fell on a fumble in the endzone and got a touchdown. He tied for the lead in targets in Week 12 with six and was second in receiving yards. So he has an 18% target share. In Week 11, he had a 30% target share and a 40% share of the air yards. So he sees volume in both targets and yards—an excellent addition for anyone wide receiver needy.

Richie James Jr.

In Week 11, James had three Targets, three receptions, 62 yards, and a touchdown. With Wan’Dale Robinson out in Week 12, James’ snaps increased to 70%. He also was tied for the team lead in targets with 6, which he turned into five receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. The Giants don’t have a lot of players on this passing tree. It’s Slayton, James, and Barkley, for the most part. So if you are needy, I would add James.

Other wide receivers to consider:

  • Isaiah McKenzie – 10 targets, six receptions, 91 yards, TD
  • DeAndre Carter – 10 Targets, seven receptions, 73 yards, TD
  • Elijah Moore – 2 Targets, two receptions, 64 yards, TD
  • Van Jefferson – 7 Targets, three receptions, 29 yards, TD

Tight Ends

Hunter Henry

He is starting to get involved in the passing game, and the schedule is terrific for him for the rest of the season. After the Bills in Week 13, he plays the Cardinals, the Raiders, the Bengals, and the Dolphins. Three of these games are against the bottom ten teams defending the tight end. In Week 12, he had five targets which he turned into three receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. So there is life in the Patriots’ passing game now, and the schedule looks friendly. Can you ask for more than that at the tight end this season?

Foster Moreau

Since Waller was sent to IR, Moreau has a 100% snap share for tight ends on the team. In Week 12 against the Seahawks, who give up the second most fantasy points to opposing team tight ends, Moreau had seven targets which he turned into three receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown. That was a 19% target share. In Week 13, the Raiders play the Chargers. The Chargers give the fifth most points to opposing teams’ tight ends. So yes, he will be a Money Maker for Week 13. This is the Return of the Island of Foster Moreau. The sequel is short and not as good, but I’ll take ten fantasy points from a tight end if I can get it.

Breaking Bread with Marcas Grant

0

Inglewood, California, is now home to the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, thanks to the brand-new and beautifully built SOFI Stadium. And as the City revitalizes with the influx of the NFL, hip new restaurants are popping up all over L.A. Someone can easily get caught up in chasing the new hotness in town without a proper guide. But that’s not what Breaking Bread is about. Instead, it’s about connecting with people over good food with soul and culture.

Sometimes that means going to a major shopping hub to find the diamond in the masses or searching out that hidden gem in a tiny strip mall. Either way, these locales are not highly advertised, and you’re finding them by word of mouth or a lucky scroll on Google. This issue’s venue is precisely like that, the unexpected, out of the way, got lost driving there, but it was so worth it type of place— Country Style Jamaican Restaurant in Inglewood. Walk-in only, so let’s start with Issue #3 with Marcas Grant. If this is your first time dining with us, click here for the concept. And if you’re returning, thank you again for joining us; let’s eat!

Breaking Bread #3 with Marcas Grant at Country Style Jamaican
Marcas, Tommy, and Wai in front of Country Style Jamaican Restaurant in Inglewood, CA

Setting the Scene

Typically a commute from Long Beach to Inglewood takes a minimum of 30 minutes in traffic. But on this sunny and hot late September day, traffic flowed as I was ready to break bread with Marcas Grant, co-host of NFL Fantasy Live on the NFL Network and host of the Fantasy Life podcast for Matthew Berry’s Fantasy Life. Arriving early to prep, I waited in the parking lot for my co-host on this issue, Wailele Sallas. Video producer for The Undroppables and creator of The Fantasy 50.

Neither Wai nor I knew what to expect as Marcas chose today’s restaurant, which is close to the new NFL Los Angeles headquarters. This tiny strip mall on the corner of Hyde Park Blvd. and La Brea Ave. is conveniently located across the DMV. And boasts an array of ethnic cuisine, from two Thai-style restaurants, Ethiopian food, a hookah lounge, and today’s treat, Jamaican food.

Taking some test photos of the outside of the restaurant, we see Marcas drive up. He barely closes his door before another car pulls up slowly while rolling his window down. In Inglewood, there’s a slight tension in the air as he stops to say something to Marcas. The man sticks his head out the window and says, “Hey! Fantasy football! What’s up with Kyle Pitts??!”. We laugh as Marcas can’t go to lunch without getting hit up for fantasy advice. This lunch is starting on the right foot.

Country Style Jamaican Restaurant is precisely what its name suggests. Country-style food cooked with love in a humble but quintessentially Jamaican setting. Complete with pictures of Bob Marley and a cricket match playing on the T.V. The reviews online praise the food, while the only complaint is the service. The (not so) secret in L.A. is that if the rating is low only because the “service is bad,” you know this is EXACTLY the restaurant you want to visit. Because I always find that when you show respect and admiration for their culture, you’re met as a welcome visitor to the family. And this restaurant welcomed us right in, especially when we ordered half the menu!

Fantasy pon di side: Marcas’ pick for League Winner

David Montgomery. Monty is now “the undisputed lead back in a run-heavy offense that just lost its best receiver [in Darnell Mooney]. He’s also got a cherry schedule the rest of the way”.

During the Covid lockdown, restaurants in L.A. had to adapt to new regulations and restrictions on indoor seating. The best situations had space and capital to construct outdoor parklets. But Country Style Jamaican is one of those restaurants that had to shift entirely to take-out, even post-lockdown, as they removed all the tables in the dining room. This prevented us from eating on location and allowed us to move our venue to a local park. We grabbed our to-go plates and set up on the bleachers behind a baseball diamond. A very fitting setting for Marcas, as I would come to learn.

Growing up in Vallejo, California, Marcas was a fan of all Bay Area sports teams except the Giants. It’s a clear East Bay identifier if you root for the Oakland A’s over the San Francisco Giants. And Marcas is true to the “Valley Joe” that’s also home to local legends like rapper E-40 and competitive eater Joey Chestnut. Marcas also chose to cheer on the San Francisco 49ers as the Raiders had moved to Los Angeles, and it was the heyday of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. But despite his love for the Bay, his dad was always a Dodgers fan. So naturally, “Los Doyers” stole Marcas’ heart as well. You might wonder why Northern California natives fell in love with a Southern California team, but Marcas has a hypothesis for his dad’s fandom.

“I have this theory about the Dodgers: Black people are usually Dodgers fans because of Jackie Robinson.”

While most of us know Marcas because of fantasy football, he is an avid baseball guy. He knows the history behind the Giants, even though he wasn’t a fan. He knows random facts about all the Bay Area teams, complete with anecdotes about how actor Tom Hanks used to sell peanuts at the Oakland Coliseum. Wai and Marcas bond over their admiration and memories of A’s outfielder Ricky Henderson and the talent in the Bay. And while Marcas grew up a fan of UC Berkeley, the University of Southern California brought him to L.A. seeking a degree in journalism that the U.C. college system didn’t offer. This circumstance leads Marcas to find the “sports mafia.”

Course 1: Jerk Chicken and Curry Goat

Course 1 – Jerk Chicken and Curry Goat

One of the most popular dishes of Jamaican cuisine, and the first thing we had to try was the jerk chicken. This dish is tied to the Arawaks, the indigenous peoples from South America who first settled on the island approximately 2,500 years ago. The Arawaks learned to smoke and dry meat, similar to making jerky. Then, in the 1600s, enslaved people were brought to Jamaica – where a group of them (called Maroons) escaped and fled into the mountains. Building upon the smoked meat method, the Maroons developed their mix of spices and herbs to marinate and cook wild boar. This eventually led to the Jamaican Jerk method.

Equally as popular in Jamaica and with similar ties to slavery is the curry goat. Curry was introduced to Jamaica post-slavery in the mid-1800s. Indentured Indian laborers were brought to the island by the British, who had sent over a million laborers across the British empire. Like Jamaican Jerk, the method of cooking curry was combined with local flavors and meat to create what we know today as curry goat. This dish includes tender, slow-cooked goat meat with aromatic flavors due to its combination of coconut milk, garlic, onion, allspice, thyme, Scotch bonnet peppers, tomatoes, and turmeric.

At Country Style Jamaican Restaurant, they serve their plates with rice and beans, steamed vegetables, fried plantains, and festival bread. And for this first plate, we opted for the two-item combo to start with these two classic dishes. This plate set off the meal with traditional flavors to get us in the groove, as both types of meat were impeccably cooked. Tender and packed with flavor.

Fantasy pon di side: December Stud – Lamar Jackson.

“The Ravens will only go as far as Jackson can carry them. He’s been forced to play hero ball for long stretches, but with Baltimore getting guys healthy, help is on the way.”

Marcas’ introduction to the sports journalism world, and the ‘sports mafia’ that comes out of USC with an internship pipeline to Fox Sports, happened by chance, as all the best things do. Growing up, Marcas wanted to read the news as a network anchor, just like Dan Rather. However, on move-in day for his first day of college, Marcas was hanging with his new roommates, that wanted to meet the guy who ran the sports department for the campus radio station. So they asked Marcas if he tried to roll with them, and the next thing he knew, he was applying to work in his first stint in radio.

Marcas loved sports and talking about sports with his friends but had never considered a career in sports journalism. Now he is getting the chance to cover women’s soccer games for USC’s student radio station KXSC. All because he had a chance opportunity that he was prepared to take, despite it being something completely new. That first gig eventually led to covering basketball and football games. After realizing that talking about sports on the radio was like talking about sports with his buddies, Marcas’ path changed forever. As Marcas says, “news is important, but sports are more fun.”

Breaking Bread on the bleachers behind the backstop
Breaking Bread on the bleachers behind the backstop.

After graduating, Marcas put together a reel of his broadcasts to send to sports media outlets. And when I say “send out,” I don’t mean emailing a link to a digital compilation or HUDL page. Instead, Marcas copied video cassette tapes, placed them in envelopes, and mailed them out to minor league teams. In 2022, terms like ‘mail,’ ‘envelope,’ and ‘tapes’ are foreign to Gen Z. Marcas knew he had to shoot his shot while freelancing and working in radio.

Paying his Dues

That hustle led Marcas to the Major League Baseball winter meetings in Dallas, Texas, in 2001. The minor league teams have a coinciding job fair, and Marcas was able to land a job with the Visalia Oaks, then an affiliate of the Oakland A’s. He did two years in the Central Valley calling play-by-play, then moved back home and worked as a stringer covering high school sports. Next, he worked at the GAP to fill in the gaps and earn extra money. He folded khakis by day and covered sports by night. He then took an opportunity in Fresno to produce, host, and call play-by-play on the radio for five years.

Once the stint in Fresno had run its course, Marcas paid his last month of rent and packed up to move to L.A. to continue his sports journalism career. He reconnected with a friend who worked for Sporting News, earning him an interview because someone’s appendix burst. Marcas got the job as an update anchor on Sporting News Radio, hosting the NFL wrap-up show from 3 AM to 5 AM for a couple of years until Sporting News was sold and Marcas was offered to move to Houston. He was once again at a crossroads in his career.

Plate of brown stew chicken

Course 2 – Brown Stew Chicken

Brown stew chicken is another classic Jamaican dish found in all Caribbean cultures. Browning chicken and then braising it for a long time with vegetables and a sauce/gravy to make a stew is certainly not unique to the Caribbean. But what makes Jamaica’s version special is the chicken is seared in oil and then braised in a Browning Sauce-based gravy with sweet and spicy peppers like Scotch bonnets.

Browning Sauce is made from caramelized sugar cooked down until it turns dark and has a smoky, almost bitter taste. This sauce is a staple in Jamaican kitchens that can be made or purchased. And the depth of flavor that is created by this dish is unreal. After braising for hours, this chicken is fall-apart tender with a slightly sweet taste and kick of heat. This is one of the better chicken dishes I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to return for more.

At this point in his career, Marcas had been paying his dues in the radio sports journalism world. And as someone aspiring to be Dan Rather and is currently on television, chasing that career in front of the camera would seem to be his passion. But in reality, Marcas has always felt his real love, in terms of creating content, was through writing. When he was 12 years old, he and his best friend were going to write the next “Boyz n the Hood.” They even had plans for Janet Jackson to produce the soundtrack. Marcas has such a love for writing that he’s even dabbled in tv writing, script writing, and writing comic books, which he loves.

Fantasy pon di side: Never draft again – Michael Thomas.

“I never say never. But it might never be again with Michael Thomas. The lingering injury issues are frustrating enough. But compounding it with his age and the Saints’ offensive issues, I want no part of him in 2023.”

After Sporting News was sold, Marcas parlayed that love of writing into writing product descriptions for websites. So if you bought porcelain figurines or hand-beaded necklaces online in the late 2000s, there’s a chance Marcas writing in the description got you hooked. But he loved writing about sports, any sports, but to say he grinded his way to his job with NFL Media would be an understatement. Besides working at the GAP and writing product descriptions, Marcas also had a paper route while working in Fresno. He jokes that he was a paper man, not a paperboy, as he delivered the paper as a 30-year-old man. And when he did get to cover baseball, it was in Stockton, where everything else sucked besides the baseball.

Marcas takes a bite out of the oxtail

Called up to the Big Leagues

Marcas worked the product description gig until 2011, when another friend told him the NFL was looking to add new talent to their media team. Never one not to shoot his shot, he applied to 5 different jobs advertised online. None of which he was qualified for. And to make matters worse, 2011 was the year of the NFL lockout. Marcas booked an interview a few months later, but no one would hire him if the NFL season was canceled.

But the day the lockout ended, Marcas received a call within hours of the announcement and was offered the job to write about fantasy football for NFL Media. A position he has now kept for the past 11 years, writing, podcasting, and talking fantasy football on T.V. By the time he joined the NFL, he was just a casual fantasy player, but his love of sports and writing made him a good fit. As a result, he came to the job not (yet) a fantasy degenerate, which has given him a level-headed approach to his analysis.

Marcas became a name in the industry almost by chance. He didn’t find the job; the job found him. As a great writer with a better work ethic, he put himself in a position to take advantage of every opportunity. But the connections Marcas made while paying his dues led to those opportunities. He put in the work, worked in areas he didn’t love, wrote about products he didn’t love, folded khakis, and was a paper man, doing whatever he needed to do to live his dream. Now, as a parent, he can sympathize with how his parents felt watching him grind his way through the sports journalism industry from the bottom. But finally, it was his time.

Course 3: braised oxtail

Course 3 – Oxtail

The most anticipated dish of the day was the oxtail. When researching Country Style Jamaican Restaurants for this issue, the oxtail was the most talked about meat on Yelp. Oxtail in Jamaican cuisine also originated with the enslaved people and maroons brought to the island from Africa. And just like jerk chicken and curry goat, Jamaicans made this dish into one of their own with signature spices and flavors.

First, the oxtails are cleaned, seasoned, and browned on all sides in a pot with a Browning Sauce-based sauce and seasoning. Next, the oxtails are removed from the pot, and a mirepoix of vegetables and garlic are added, as well as beef broth and herbs. Once the broth is simmering, the oxtails are left to braise for a few hours until the marrow starts to seep into the broth, and the meat falls off the bone. This dish will have me returning to Country Style Jamaican for years, and best represents the highlight of Jamaican cuisine.

Marcas’ tenure at the NFL has been fun every step of the way. Besides the work, he has met some lifelong friends like the two previous subjects of Breaking Bread, Matt Harmon, and James Koh. Although those two guys have moved on to new and exciting ventures, as we previously spotlighted, some of the best times Marcas has had at the NFL were with that old crew. One memory that sticks out was James Koh hosting the “K-town throw-down” before the start of every season. Marcas reminisces about the late nights of Korean BBQ, flowing soju, and boisterous karaoke as they kicked off the season.

Changing the Game

To be where he is now, Marcas feels blessed and grateful. He reminds himself how lucky and far he has come, especially as a minority in the industry. One of Marcas’ goals is to expand the diversity in the industry. Something we also spoke about with James Koh. Marcas is happy with how much diversity has increased in the industry. But when he finally leaves fantasy football as a career, he wants to see things in a better place than when he arrived. A more diverse space that normalizes women and minorities.

That diversity is on full display with the NFL Fantasy Live show five days a week on the NFL Network. Marcas and his co-hosts Kimmi Chex, Adam Rank, Cynthia Frelund, Patrick Claybon, and Mike Florio deliver fantasy takes with a ton of energy and creativity. The level of diversity on the show is unique in the industry and on this type of platform. But for the cast, it’s an unspoken thing for them. The diversity is intentional but also organic. No one on the show is there because they check a box. They are the best people to fill that position, regardless of gender or ethnicity. The show represents the general audience watching football and playing fantasy football today.

Country Style Jamaican interior

Because at the end of the day, “fantasy football is just Dungeons and Dragons for sports nerds.”

Fantasy pon di side: NFL and Fantasy MVPs – Josh Allen and Travis Kelce.

“Josh Allen takes it home after another phenomenal season.” Complete with a Super Bowl win prediction for the Bills over the Eagles, “folding tables beware.” And for Kelce, “he’s been the biggest advantage to any roster this season. When you thought someone else was coming for his crown, he reminds you who he is.”

And since Marcas is a self-proclaimed nerd with various interests, he wants to branch out beyond fantasy. Partly by creating more lifestyle content. He once filmed a travel-style pilot episode for the NFL. He flew to Seattle, took in sites like the famous Pike Place Market, and checked out the original Starbucks. Marcas told security they were shooting a student film since they didn’t have a permit. Guerilla filmmaking at its best. He even got to interview Steve Raibel, the play-by-play radio commentator for the Seattle Seahawks. The NFL didn’t air the pilot episode and it’s probably living somewhere deep in the interwebs. But the concept and execution shows his interests beyond fantasy football.

Marcas continues to find that creative outlet through side projects like his YouTube channel and content creation team, 30TwoBit. This platform allows him to branch out into comedy, nostalgia, pop culture, sports, fashion, trending topics, news, and more. But since football is his full-time gig, 30TwoBit ramps up during the offseason with various podcasts and live streams. As a result, Marcas can create the content he’s interested in with other young, like-minded creators instead of just serving as an ATM for fantasy advice. Like today’s lunch, people are hitting up Marcas in the most random places while looking at pigs at the L.A. County fair. Whether with 30TwoBit or some other creative outlet, Marcas hopes to grow his other interests into something big because he only has so many takes about the same players.

Course 4: Rumcake

Course 4 – Rum Cake

We ended the meal with another quintessential Caribbean dessert, Jamaican Rum Cake. Like the other dishes on today’s menu, rum cake introduction to the island by British colonists in the 1700s. It has its roots in English fruit puddings (e.g., “figgy pudding”), but as the Jamaicans do, they incorporated their traditional island flavors to make this dessert one of their own. Instead of brandy typically used in British desserts, Jamaicans used rum, readily available throughout the Caribbean.

The cake reflects over 100 years of Jamaican history and culture, down to the sugar and molasses that kept colonizers on the islands for so long as these products were traditional exports. And even the ingredients are reminiscent of pre-electricity preservation practices using sugar and alcohol as preservatives. To make this cake, besides rum, the ever-present ingredient Browing Sauce is once again a staple of this dish. The rest of the ingredients are standard for a fruit cake with alcohol: butter, flour, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, spices, molasses, and of course, rum. Mix with blended fruit, bake and serve. The rum cake sells in small loaves at country-style Jamaican restaurants that are perfect to share with others. A perfect treat at the end of a meal with friends or shared with family over the holidays.

Dad Life

As we have learned over this lunch, Marcas has many talents and passions. So I hit him with the million-dollar question, “With a man with many varying interests, what is your #1 passion right now?” Marcas, “I would have to say it’s my kid.” As fathers with two kids of our own, Wai and I loved that answer. Because we know the love and joy that comes from watching a little person grow, watching what comes online as they get older is fun. And sharing our interests and vibing on the same thing across generations is one of the things Marcas loves the most about parenthood. One of the worst things is trying to maintain that work-life balance.

That balance became so much harder for those in the media/content industry during the Covid lockdown in 2020. Marcas set up his new at-home studio in his kid’s bedroom. He was trying to steal time to broadcast between nap times. And as a man that has been almost entirely in front of a microphone or camera for his career, he’s now having to wear multiple hats to continue doing his job. Having to add lighting, directing, sound engineering, and makeup to his new set of skills. Marcas laughs about asking his wife to help him not look like he’s wearing clown makeup to get that right shade of foundation. Not only was it a learning curve, but it was an equalizer. Everyone essentially became an at-home streamer.

Fantasy pon di side: Looking Ahead – Travis Etienne and Bijan Robinson.

“It’s obvious [Travis] is the future of an emerging offense in Jacksonville. He has three-down back potential. The issue will be how early will I have to reach to get him?” As a rookie to watch in the 2023 NFL Draft, Marcas has his eye on Texas R.B. Bijan Robinson, “we are going to be talking about him as possibly the first overall dynasty rookie draft pick next year.”

Now that his work life has mostly returned to normal, Marcas continues to find ways to maintain the balance. He prioritizes blocking off hours between after work and bedtime as “dad time.” As someone still close to his father, being a good dad is a top priority for Marcas. He enjoys taking his family to the beach or the tide pools at White Point in San Pedro. Living in Southern California with Disneyland nearby, his son is into Disney and Mickey Mouse. But what he digs into the most is dinosaurs. Luckily, the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach has the Wonder of Dinosaurs. It’s a two-story dinosaur attraction with an interactive museum, dinosaur train, dino-themed bounce houses, and even a mini-golf course.

Mixed plate with all the food

Outside of dad life, Marcas loves to cook. He makes curry from scratch with homegrown herbs from his garden. Going through the steps to prepare the ‘mise en place’ for a dish is therapeutic. When not cooking, you can find Marcas at Dodgers stadium, where you can hit him up for fantasy advice. No, please don’t do that. But if you’re going to grab a Dodger dog, try it Marcas’ way with ketchup, mustard, and onions.

Fantasy pon di side: League Loser – Christian McCaffrey.

“Not exactly a league loser [in that he’s not going to score you points]. But he’s also not the guy you thought you were drafting. He’s getting fewer snaps and touches now that he’s in an offense loaded with weapons. As a result, he’s gone from being an elite fantasy back to an above-average one.”

Another locale around Los Angeles that you must make time for when visiting SOFI is The Last Bookstore in Downtown. It’s the largest new and used bookstore in California, with rare books and vintage vinyl. Marcas also recommends The Original Pantry Cafe or Chips Restaurant for classic breakfast and good ole fashioned diner food. If you’re looking for a good burger, check out Simzy’s. Or if you want to try something different, Tara’s Himalayan Cuisine on the west side boasts the best yak chili in L.A. If you try yak chili, it might as well be the best. However, if you want to sample a little bit of everything, head to Grand Central Market Downtown, with almost 40 food vendors. Try the Thai street food or plan to wait for Eggslut; trust me, it’s worth it.

The Alter Ego

Marcas tells a story about how Paul Newman would talk to you about movies and would be polite in the conversation. But if you want to pique his interest, speak to him about race cars, and he’ll talk to you all day. And what piques Marcas’ interest is comic books. And his not-so-secret favorite comic book character is Spider-Man. The mythos resonates with Marcas because Spider-Man is one of us. The other superheroes are somewhat unreliable, but Peter Parker has real people problems. He’s nervous when talking to a girl he likes, and has experienced being yelled at by his boss.

And Marcas’ favorite multi-verse version of Spider-Man is Miles Morales from “Into the Spiderverse.” Besides providing a fresh take on the character, the movie also introduced a new generation of kids to hip-hop. They are giving parents another way to relate to their kids across generations. Because Into the Spiderverse is also a movie about sons, fathers, and father figures. Another way Spider-Man relates to the average person. These messages resonated so much in Marcas’ life that he hopes to write a comic with his characters one day.

But that love for comics didn’t start at a young age as it did for so many of us. Instead, comics came to him later in life, sort of like fantasy football. Growing up, he watched superhero cartoons, but it wasn’t until he worked at the NFL that he fell in love with the written version. That first graphic novel was Watchmen. After seeing the movie, he borrowed a copy from a colleague before purchasing one. Then, he would walk to the local comic book store by the old NFL office in Culver City and search out new Image Comics with writers he liked. So instead of soaking up the classics like Superman first, Marcas again took an alternative path to experience the genre.

Fantasy pon di side: Free Nuggets

“Make the experience enjoyable by drafting players you like and want to watch. Even if it’s as simple as you don’t like Rams players, it takes skill to build a roster and set a lineup, but once the game starts, it’s out of your hands. So enjoy it as much as possible. Learn not to check scores and obsess over them constantly. Why stress yourself out about it?”

That theme echoes throughout Marcas’ life. He is always on the traditional path from a good school to a corporate hierarchy. He progressed from one job to another and has gone through multiple routes such as sports radio, calling a baseball game, NFL work, fantasy football, and even fantasy football. They say luck happens when preparation meets opportunity; by that definition, Marcas has been very lucky. He takes chances at every opportunity that appears to him. He has confidence in his skills and the quality of his work. And he’s not afraid to put himself out there and take a chance because he wants to try out something he loves.

So much so that in 2017 he stumbled upon a 1970’s T.V. show called “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” which was an inspiration for the “X Files.” Marcas loved the show so much that he watched every episode and wrote a weekly review that he published on his blog. He wrote it because it was his creative outlet, not because he expected anyone to read it. Which is even more rewarding when people found it and said how much they loved it. While researching this article, I read through the series and the other blog posts on Marcas’ site. Well-written glimpses into Marcas’ life. His interests, his fears, his humor. Marcas puts himself in his writing and lets you into his life.

Appreciations

I thank Marcas for letting us into his life today to break bread with Wai and me at this random baseball diamond in Inglewood, eat excellent Jamaican food, and get to know one of our favorite fantasy football analysts better. It will be exciting to see where Marcas’ career takes him because whatever he puts his heart into, he’s successful. But for now, tune in to NFL Network and The Fantasy Life podcast, where you can find all his fantasy football advice. So you can stop hassling him on the streets for a start/sit question. And subscribe to 30TwoBit on YouTube to catch all the creative projects his team comes up with.

A huge thanks to Wai Sallas for being a great co-host, Fantasy Dukes for the excellent graphics, and our editor Derek Fuchs for helping me look good. And as always, thank you, the reader, for choosing to spend time with us. We hope you join us again soon to Break Bread with The Undroppables

Money Makers and Heart Breakers (Fantasy Football 2022 – Week 12)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I will make this brief this week as so much is going on. But first, I want to wish every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Try to enjoy the day.

The worst thing about the holiday season is many people stress out about who they will see or will not see. But, there is a secret here for all of you. Stay in touch with the people you want to be in touch with all year round. This means family and friends. If people are not in contact with you at the very least here and there throughout the year, DO NOT stress out overseeing them. In all honesty, I don’t see them at all.

If you are not seeing people that stay in touch with you all year, don’t get mad about it. They take the time to check in with you and see you all year. Those people care about you; they don’t wait until the holidays to show everyone else this.

I am thankful for you every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

Joe Burrow

I wrote about Burrow last week in this column. He had a great matchup with the Steelers, and he threw for 355 yards and four touchdowns against them. Burrow has multiple touchdowns in four out of the last five games. In Week 12, the Bengals play the Titans. The Titans give the 6th most points to the opposing team’s quarterbacks. The Titans give up an average of 288 yards and two touchdowns to quarterbacks weekly. So Burrow is in the middle of a lovely stretch of easy matchups.

$8,600 on Fanduel

Justin Herbert

People were worried about Herbert for a few weeks. Last week he got Keenan Allen back and had Mike Williams for at least a bit. Then, everything changed; the Chargers’ passing game looked like the Chargers’ passing game. Herbert threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns. This week the Chargers play the Cardinals. The Cardinals give the fifth most fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Last week Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns against this Cardinals team. Look for Herbert to be all Charged up and throw for another 250 yards or so and multiple touchdowns.

$7,000 on DraftKings
$7,900 on Fanduel

Geno Smith

Geno is coming off a bye week to play the Raiders. The Raiders give the third most fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Perfect team to come back to after a bye week. Get that rust off. In the last two games he played in, Geno had 275 yards and two touchdowns passing in each game. Geno has multiple touchdowns in all but two games this season. So you can easily pick up what I am putting down on this one. YO! It’s Geno!

Taylor Heinicke

$5,300 on DraftKings

Running Backs

Jeff Wilson Jr.

The Texans give up the most fantasy points to running backs. Every week a running back has double-digit fantasy points against this defense. Wilson has acclimated himself to Miami like a retired 75-year-old. He has been leading Dolphins running backs in snaps since joining the team. He has a touchdown in each of his last two games. And now he has the best matchup he could ask for.

$5,900 on DraftKings
$7,700 on Fanduel

Leonard Fournette

The Browns give up the second most fantasy points to running backs. They are trying hard to catch up to the Texans in this category. The Browns are much friendlier than the Texans because they give up five receptions and 36 yards receiving to running backs weekly. This is an excellent match for Fournette and Rachaad White. Tampa will utilize both guys heavily this week.

$5,800 on DraftKings
$7,200 on Fanduel

Latavius Murray

Melvin Gordon got waived, and Chase Edmonds went to IR. Denver plays the Panthers. The Panthers give the sixth most fantasy points to opposing teams running backs. Murray is the best option in the Broncos’ run game by default. The volume will be there in an excellent matchup for the 32-year-old, that has revived his career.

Wide Receivers

Terry McLaurin

Scary Terry has a 22% target share of the Commanders’ passes. He also has a whopping 38% air yards share. His target share and volume of targets have increased dramatically since Heinicke took over at quarterback in Week 7. He has seven or more targets in 5 straight weeks. Double-digit fantasy scores in three out of the last five games. In Week 12, he gets to play against the Falcons. The Falcons give the opposing team’s wide receivers the second most fantasy points. Wide receivers average 15 receptions, 188 yards, and a touchdown weekly against the Falcons. It’s a cornucopia of fantasy points for McLaurin this week

Tee Higgins

Higgins has double-digit fantasy scores in three of the last four games. With Ja’Marr Chase out, Higgins has been excellent. This week he gets a great matchup as well against the Titans. The titans give the third most fantasy points to opposing teams’ wide receivers. He catches everything thrown his way with a 70% catch rate. He has 712 yards on the season; this looks like an easy 1000-yard season for Higgins. We are looking at 100 yards and a touchdown this week to add to his totals.

Christian Kirk

I had been waiting for this stretch of games for some time. In the last two games combined, Kirk has 21 targets, 17 receptions, 181 yards, and three touchdowns. That is an excellent two-game stretch. In Week 12, the Jaguars come off their bye week to play the Ravens. The Ravens give opposing teams’ wide receivers the sixth most fantasy points. So Kirk will take his 25% target share, and 31% air yards share and lead us to another week of fantasy goodness. Once again, Kirk will be banging fantasy points like Captain James Kirk does alien women.

Tight Ends

Gerald Everett

The Cardinals give up the most points to opposing teams’ tight ends. Everett has been involved in the passing attack when healthy. He has a 15% target share and is third on the team in targets this season. The matchup is right. The Cardinals have given up nine touchdowns to tight ends this season.

Tyler Higbee

The Rams play the Chiefs in Week 12. The Chiefs give up the tenth most fantasy points to tight ends. This is my third week writing about Higbee. He has a 26% target share since Cooper Kupp has been injured, leading all Rams receivers. Higbee is the player most involved in the Rams’ passing game, with Kupp being out. The offensive line is terrible, and Stafford will need to get the ball out fast. The matchup is good. Look for another 8-10 targets and production based on volume and matchup. Higbee will feast this week.

💔Heart Breakers

Quarter Backs

Sam Darnold

The Broncos give the least amount of fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. The Panthers’ passing game hasn’t exactly been great this season. This will be Darnolds’ first game this season, and I expect him to be rusty. This is not the place to plug Darnold in, even out of desperation. Yuck, someone put raisins in the stuffing.

Tua Tagovailoa

During the season-long leagues, I play Tua myself. In DFS, I don’t want to pay up for Tua this week against the Texans. The Texans give up the third least amount of fantasy points to opposing teams’ quarterbacks. That is because it’s SO easy to run on them. The game script says the Dolphins will grow legs this week and run, run, run all over the Texans. Did you picture an actual Dolphin with legs? You didn’t, did you?

Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill might have a great game like he did last week to keep the Titans in this game against the Bengals. The Bengals have only given up one game of over 20 fantasy points to a quarterback this season. So more than likely, you aren’t playing Tannehill unless you are in a two QB league anyways. If you are playing him, all I can say is, “I’m sorry.”

Running Backs

Alvin Kamara

The Saints play the Niners in Week 12. The Niners are the second-toughest team against running backs. Kamara has been just ok when playing top 10 defenses against running backs this season. This means you play him in season-long and hope for the best and you expect not so much in DFS and avoid him. His over-under, for me, is 10 fantasy points, and I think he has to get a touchdown to get the over.

Nick Chubb

Chubb has looked like one of the best running backs in the league this season. He has got it done against tough run defenses already. He only has two games where he hasn’t reached double-digit fantasy scores. This week will most likely be his third week there. The Buccaneers give up the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing teams running backs. He might make it to 10 fantasy points, but I am not spending up for him in DFS to get 10 points.

Joe Mixon

If Mixon is still in concussion protocol, insert Samaje Perine’s name here. It’s much easier to pass against the Titans than to run on them. So the Bengals’ will pass the ball. This is another case of a bad matchup: don’t pay up in DFS. It simply isn’t worth it this week.

Wide Receivers

DJ Moore

Moore is successful with Sam Darnold as his quarterback. But the Broncos are the second toughest team against the pass in the league. It will be Darnold’s first game back on the field. This is a situation to avoid at all costs. The Panthers aren’t perfect, are they? I got the bucket for this one.

Jaylen Waddle

I love the Dolphins’ passing game. So writing this breaks my heart as I have Waddle on many a season-long team. The Texans give up the fourth fewest points to wide receivers. This is because you can run all over them. So the Dolphins will use a game script to run and run some more simply because they can.

Darnell Mooney

Is Justin Fields playing? I don’t know. I do know two things. First, the Jets’ defense is good, and the passing volume for the Bears has been low all season. So, I am not touching him unless Mooney has some smash matchup. I love it when it is this easy.

Tight Ends

George Kittle

Is Kittle a heartbreaker this week? What is wrong with you, Reedy? He had 84 yards and two touchdowns last week. That was last week against the Cardinals, who stink against tight ends. This week, the Niners play the Saints, the second-toughest team against tight ends. Only one tight end has scored a touchdown against the Saints, and not a single tight end has scored nine or more fantasy points against this defense. The game script, play calling, and coaching matters. The Niners will likely move to other skill players this week simply because they can.

Tyler Conklin

With Mike White named the starter, maybe Conklin will produce as he did when noodle-armed Flacco highly targeted his tight end out of necessity. But the Bears are tough on the tight end position. Only two tight ends have broken 10 points against the Bears this season. So unless he sees 12 targets or more, there is almost no way Conklin does that.

NOTE: There are SO many tight ends I could say are heartbreakers this week, but what is the point? You already know that.

Good luck this week, and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Undroppables!
