First Half Phenoms 2020

0

Fantasy Football is built on the process of research, projection, and prognostication. It can be exhausting at times to analyze information and interpret the analysis of others, only to realize we are not oracles and have a hard time predicting much anything on a week-to-week basis. (If you can’t tell, I’m still tilting from Carson Wentz’s Week 8 performance on Sunday Night Football.)

In any case, I’d like to offer a breath of fresh air from the crystal ball crowing we do each week and write an appreciation post for the players that have balled out through the first 8 weeks of the season: The First Half Phenoms of Fantasy Football.

These are players I can’t stop thinking about in relation to our offseason prep, and to an extent how I, “shoulda/woulda/coulda” drafted them in more leagues.

Kyler Murray

You may have “overpaid” for a year-two jump in production from Kyler Murray compared to Patrick Mahomes in 2018 and Lamar Jackson in 2019, but the mid-round QB has paid off in spades for fantasy managers thus far. Murray creates fantasy points both through the air and on the ground, proving he’s the high-floor/high-ceiling dual threat analysts like Ben Gretch touted him to be.

Murray leads all QBs with 437 rushing yards and 7 rushing TDs. His last 4 rushing TDs have come from 1, 2, 1, and 5 yards away from the goal line. Cardinals Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury is scheming Murray to run in goal-to-go situations, and with Murray’s elite speed on tap, it’s one of the easiest conversions in football. I can’t wait to see more of this (plus spike weeks in the passing game) as the season rolls on.

Davante Adams

Let’s move on to a stud who is continuously underrated in most wide receiver conversations. Though he’s only played 5 games so far due to injury and a Week 5 bye, Davante Adams is far and away the WR1 in PPR points per game with 27. The next highest is Tyler Lockett with 21.2 (more on him later.)

There were concerns around the Packers playing a conservative, run-first offense after their uninspiring 2020 NFL draft, but that was never going to stop Adams from being an absolute target hog. While he won’t end the season with his 16-game pace of 186 targets, 138 receptions, 1,606 yards, and 22 TDs, (my god) the volume he’s seeing is plenty to keep those that drafted him satisfied. Bad luck in New Orleans aside, Adams was always an obvious candidate to supplant Michael Thomas as the WR1 for 2020.

Calvin Ridley

Besides two outlier games, (one goose egg against the aforementioned Packers and his most recent game where he left early due to injury) Calvin Ridley has been a model of consistency. In the 6 games you loved having Ridley on your roster, he’s never had lower than 74% snap share or 7 targets. In 4 of those 6 games, he amassed double-digit targets and over 100 yards receiving. Add in his knack of getting open in the end zone, (6 TDs on the season so far) and it’s safe to say Ridley is on the path to complete the well-known “third-year breakout” for wide receivers.

Whether it was talks of Julio Jones still being 1A in the offense or Ridley only being productive when Austin Hooper was out of the lineup last season, I think most of these arguments against Ridley can be put to rest. A lingering injury may slow his momentum for the rest of 2020, so it will be important to remember these first 8 games when we evaluate Ridley for 2021.

Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf

If you had any intuition that the Seahawks coaching staff would legitimately “Let Russ Cook” in 2020, the top pass-catching options for Russell Wilson were absolute smashes at their ADP. Metcalf and Lockett were being drafted as WR19 and WR22 off the board respectively. Their PPR points per game ranks them as WR3 and WR2, respectively. Russell Wilson has consistently shown upside of being hyper-efficient throwing the ball, and their high-octane offense shows no signs of slowing down.

James Robinson

Moving on from receivers, let’s touch quickly on a position group that “doesn’t matter,” AKA running back. While I say this tongue-in-cheek, injuries have plagued the NFL as a whole this season, and running back is no different. Plenty of studs have been absent from the field. The unique part about the position though is that the pathway to opportunity for running backs is significantly clearer than wide receiver or tight end.

Enter James Robinson. As soon as the Jaguars decided to cut Leonard Fournette, Robinson was a recent, young acquisition that had a window to win the workhorse role in the backfield.

Compounded by the unfortunate absence of Ryquell Armstead due to COVID-19, Robinson has made the most of his opportunity. He’s currently ranked as RB5 on the season and RB6 in PPR points per game, despite running behind a bottom-tier offensive line.

My personal advice to anyone smart enough to add Robinson for free prior to the season: Don’t overthink it. Keep starting him, and if you’re worried, plan ahead with added RB depth. He’s a legitimate contributor in your redraft lineups until he proves otherwise.

That’s all the praise I have to give for now. If you have these guys on your team, enjoy the ride! If you’d like to tell me who YOUR First Half Phenom of 2020 is, hit me up on Twitter, @AndrewMackens. Stay tuned for tomorrow, when I will share some of my favorite potential league winners for redraft this season.

UNtangling the Waiver Wire (Fantasy Football 2020 – Week 9)

As a I sit here working through who to add, I can’t help but think that you will be reading this on Election Day. I hope you made time to go out and vote today, it is after all your civic duty.  Please, please, please, remember no matter which candidate you were hoping would win on this election day, we should be uniting the country and moving forward together.

Now back to Fantasy Football!  That is after all why you are reading this.

NOTE: If you are new around here, this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo,  ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Nick Mullens – Mullens came in to relieve Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 8. Mullens passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns in only one half of a game. Mullens has ten career starts with over 200 yards and at least one touchdown in nine of those games.  Jimmy G will be missing multiple weeks with his ankle injury.  Mullens is a solid floor play and yes, we know I love floor play. 1% rostered in Yahoo, 0% in ESPN, 0% in Sleeper. (10% FAAB)

Drew Lock – Lock is passed for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns in Week 8 against the Chargers.  In Week 9 he gets the lowest ranked defense against quarterbacks in fantasy, the Atlanta Falcons. If you are looking for a bye week fill-in or are streaming at the position, Lock is a viable option. 10% rostered in Yahoo, 5% in ESPN, 17% in Sleeper. (10% FAAB)

Other Quarterbacks to consider: Kirk Cousins and Philip Rivers.

Running Backs

Damien Harris – Against the Bills in Week 8, Harris had 16 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown.  Next up is the Jets.  The Jets are the a bottom ten team against the run.  Harris was the only bright spot in the Patriots offense and has been getting more and more touches.  I expect Harris to feast on yardage and in the end zone against the Jets. 47% rostered in Yahoo, 31% in ESPN, 51% in Sleeper. (8% FAAB)

Zack Moss – Moss had the breakout game everyone was looking for against the Patriots in Week 8.  Moss ran for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns on Sunday.  55% rostered in Yahoo, 36% in ESPN, 54% in Sleeper.   (5% FAAB)

DeeJay Dallas – Both Carlos Hyde and Chris Carson were Out for the Seahawks in Week 8. Dallas came up big with 41 yards rushing and a touchdown and 5 receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown as a receiver. I would pay attention to the Seattle practice schedule, as Dallas will be heavily used again if both Hyde and Carson are Out in Week 9. 25% rostered in Yahoo, 11% in ESPN, and 44% in Sleeper. (5% FAAB)

Other running backs to consider: Gus Edwards, Justin Jackson, La’Mical Perine, and Joshua Kelley.

Wide Receivers

Curtis Samuel – In the last two weeks, Samuel has been getting more involved as both a wide receiver and as a running back.  Samuel has scored in each of the last two games and has had at least 5 targets per game in his last three games played. 20% rostered in Yahoo, 37% rostered in ESPN, 20% in Sleeper.  (7% of FAAB)

Jalen Reagor – The Eagles have a Week 9 bye, but Reagor appears to be the second option in the Eagles passing attack.  Reagor saw 6 targets for 3 receptions with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in Week 8. The Giants are next up, and that can only mean fantasy goodness for Reagor. 24% rostered in Yahoo, 14% in ESPN, 46% in Sleeper. (5% FAAB)

Kendrick Bourne – With Deebo Samuel on the shelf and a backup quarterback playing half the game, Bourne found his identity in the passing game again. In Week 8, Bourne had 10 targets for 8 receptions and 81 yards. Green Bay is up next, and it’s likely that the Niners will be passing to stay with the Packers. 8% rostered in Yahoo, 5% in ESPN, 18% in Sleeper. (5% FAAB)

Other wide receivers to consider: Mecole Hardman, Darnell Mooney, and Jakobi Meyers.

NOTE: Marvin Jones and Corey Davis are hovering at or above 50% rostership. Both Jones and Davis should be rostered in all leagues.

Tight Ends

Trey Burton – Burton rushed for a touchdown and caught 4 passes for 58 yards and another touchdown against the Bengals in Week 6.  He followed this up in Week 8 with anther rushing touchdown and 3 receptions for 9 yards. It appears Burton is the Colts goal line back right now. 22% rostered in Yahoo, 9% in ESPN, 33% rostered in Sleeper. (8% FAAB)

Logan Thomas – Thomas has a touchdown in each of the last two games.  He has also seen at least four targets in every game this season.  The switch at quarterback has worked out well for Thomas.  In Week 6, Thomas had 42 yards and a touchdown against the Giants. 23% rostered in Yahoo, 8% in ESPN and 26% in Sleeper. (3% FAAB)

Jordan Reed – Reed is coming back from IR just in time to take the place of the injured George Kittle.  With Kittle going out indefinitely, Reed will become utilized heavily in the Niners passing game. 3% rostered in Yahoo, 1% in ESPN and 8% in Sleeper. (3% FAAB)

Other tight ends to consider: Eric Ebron and Austin Hooper.

The Stream Option (Fantasy Football 2020 – Week 9)

The Stream Option is a weekly article where The Undroppables explore the best options at Quarterback, Defense, and Tight End that should be available in most leagues.
*Note: ESPN rostership rates were gathered on 11/3/2020 and are subject to change.

Quarterbacks

Derek Carr – LV @ LAC

Derek Carr is currently the QB19 and rostered in 61.2% of ESPN leagues. While Carr hasn’t been prolific in fantasy this season, he has been consistent and rarely busts. In fact, Carr has zero games this season scoring less than 12 fantasy points, so he brings a consistent floor to your squad if you choose to trust him. In Week 9, Carr will face a Chargers secondary that has allowed 4 top-10 finishes to opposing quarterbacks this season, including a 20-point outing surrendered to Drew Lock just last week. In addition, the over/under for this game is currently at 54 points, making it the second-highest suggested point total of the week for what should be a shootout.

Matthew Stafford – DET @ MIN

Similar to Carr, Stafford also has zero games lower than twelve points this season. While being consistent, Stafford has also shown that he can have the big game every now and then, finishing as a top-10 QB in Weeks 4 and 8. Meanwhile, Stafford faces the third-best matchup for fantasy quarterbacks in the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota has been on the opposite end of four top-10 QB weeks this season, and this game offers a high over/under of 53.5 points. Stafford is only rostered in 65% of ESPN leagues.

Other options: Drew Lock @ ATL (6.2% rostered), Kirk Cousins vs DET (19.1% rostered)

Tight Ends

Jordan Akins/Darren Fells – HOU @ JAX

I have bad luck when trying to project who will play and who won’t in this column, so I present to you what I call the “whichever one plays strategy.” Akins has missed the past four weeks with a concussion and an ankle issue after starting off the season averaging 9.2 points per game. In Week 9, the Texans will face a Jaguars defense that currently allows 12.3 points per game to the Tight End position. If Akins is playing on Sunday, he should start over Fells, but be ready to pivot to Fells if Akins can’t play. Akins is currently rostered in 1.9% of ESPN leagues while Fells has a rostership rate of 7.5%.

Eric Ebron – PIT @ DAL

I touted Ebron pretty hard this offseason, and he has been a little hit-or-miss so far this season. However, he has now strung together two solid games in a row, scoring over 10 fantasy points against the Titans and the Ravens. He has started to develop a solid rapport with QB Ben Roethlisberger, averaging almost 6 targets per game since Week 2. This week, the Steelers will face a Dallas defense that has been horrid against the pass all season, so there should be an opportunity for Ebron to continue this stretch of good games. Ebron is currently rostered in 61.6% of ESPN leagues.

Defenses

Washington Football Team D/ST – WAS vs NYG

The Giants are currently the third-best matchup for opposing fantasy defenses, and Washington averaging 3 sacks per game will face a less-than-average offensive line. In their first meeting of the season, the WFT defense put up 6 fantasy points against the Giants. However, coming off their bye, I think they can do even better in Week 9. The Football Team defense is currently rostered in 23.3% of ESPN leagues.

New England Patriots D/ST – NE @ NYJ

While the Patriots are rostered in 75% of ESPN leagues, they should provide a great game if they are available. The Jets are having an awful season, with more losses on the season than offensive touchdowns, as @Masterjune70 points out in this thread.

Meanwhile, the Patriots currently rank as the 10th best defense in fantasy, so expect a solid game for them in Week 9.

Other options: Texans D/ST @ JAX w/ Jake Luton or Mike Glennon at QB (2.8% rostership), Giants D/ST @ WAS (2.4% rostership)
