UNreel Movies | February 2021

Another month, another quick list of movie recommendations from our entertainment connoisseur and Editor in Chief, Andrew Mackens. We like to fade the chalk here at The Undroppables, so instead of going 100% romantic comedy coming off of Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a little variety for you.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

I am NOT a big fan of rom coms, but this one was recommended to me by a friend years ago and I had to re-watch it for the first time this Valentine’s Day. Combine a star-studded cast with a major twist at the climax, and you’ve got a can’t-miss, lighthearted movie on your hands that can be watched on any date night.

Judas and the Black Messiah

The latest Warner Bros. film to simultaneously release in theaters and on HBO Max, Daniel Kaluuya plays the social activist and Chairman of the Black Panther Party Illinois Chapter, Fred Hampton. The film is inspired by true events and follows the Important story of his assassination. Kaluuya and co-actor actor Lakeith Stanfield are phenomenal in this movie, and there’s a good chance this movie gets some Oscar attention as well.

Minari

A24 is on top of their game with the films they put out, and Minari is supposed to be no exception. Minari is about a Korean family moving to middle America seeking the American Dream. Telling by the trailer, there’s going to be tragedy and levity every step of the way. I’ve only heard good things about this one, so it’s heavily on my radar to find a way to watch this on VOD or in a theater soon and experience this heartening portrayal of an immigrant family trying to make it.

Wind River

Written by Taylor Sheridan, (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Yellowstone) Wind River is a neo-western that, at it’s core, is about resiliency and justice in one of the more unforgiving and unjust parts of the world. Set on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, this murder mystery brings chilling tension, beautiful cinematography of the setting, and even some social commentary in a film that’s well worth the rent. BONUS: If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe like me, it’s nice to see Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff) in different, non-MCU roles.
