UNreel Movies | October 2020

At The Undroppables, we’re always looking to inject more culture into our content. Believe it or not, there’s more to life than Fantasy Football, and we can help you in more ways than fantasy advice to offer a distraction from everyday life.

This started with Chef Beezy bringing you gameday eats like Monkey Bread and CMC Bites. As someone who loves watching and talking about movies, I wanted to bring the next series of lifestyle posts to our readers. This will be a monthly column of movie recommendations, featuring picks from various members of The Undroppables crew.

This month’s theme (of course) is horror movies. “Spooky SZN,” as the kids say, has been upon us for a couple weeks now, but there’s still plenty of time to check out some of the gang’s favorite horror films. If you ever have any recommendations of you own, you can always hit us up on Twitter. Hope you enjoy!

As a horror film junkie, there’s no way I could narrow my recommendations down to two movies. So, I have a pick for each subgenre of horror that I think you’ll love.

Paranormal Horror: The Conjuring. Quickly becoming a horror classical. This staple is the first of a 6-movie universe. The first is always the best and has great story development as well as good scares.

Slasher: The Strangers. This is a great horror film that is creepy and sure to make you check that your doors are locked afterwards. This is one of my all-time favorites and hope y’all like it as well.

Psychological Horror: Oculus. This is a film that keeps your brain constantly thinking and questioning what is real and what is a hallucination. It’s a film you definitely have to give your full attention, but is bound to give you a jump or two while making you question everything. This one can be found on Hulu.

The first movie I’m going to recommend is a sort of subversive horror/comedy blend that serves up more ingenuity than it does scares. Scare Me (streaming on Shudder) is as original as horror movies come. The other movie I recommend is a bit older, but if you haven’t seen it you’re in for a treat. Green Room on Netflix is a grunge metal-infused bloodfest set in a backwoods Nazi club.

The Cabin in the Woods. A seemingly run-of-the-mill horror film at first glance, this entry into the horror genre produced by Avengers Writer/Director Joss Whedon uses every horror trope in the book to comedic effect, subverting your expectations for what the film is “supposed” to be. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of blood and gore to go around for everyone, and it can be streamed on Hulu or Prime Video.

Midsommar. Written and directed by rising star Ari Aster, Midsommar is bright, beautiful, and a disturbing trip for a group of college vacationers getting in too deep with a Swedish community. Jordan Peele has called this one, “The most idyllic horror film of all time,” and I would concur it’s worth a watch for the visuals alone. This one is also available on Prime Video.
