Untangling the Waiver Wire (Fantasy Football 2021 – Week 9)

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Halloween. I love seeing the kids in their costumes it is always fun. I am very happy to say I didn’t eat much candy.

The injury bug just keeps going, at the time of writing this article it was released that Derrick Henry may now be out for the season. I have Jeremy McNichols as the add here but we will be watching this to see if the Titans add someone prior to the trade deadline which is today Tuesday, November 2.

NOTE: If you are new around here this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Taysom Hill

Hill is expected to clear concussion protocol for week 9. Even if he is not back for week 9 I would make Hill a priority add. Hill started 4 games last year and showed he has upside as a runner and finished as a top 15 QB scorer in each of the 4 weeks he started. He averaged 21 points per game over that 4 games stretch.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tua had an off week against a tough Bills defense. The good news is Week 9 brings the Houston Texans to Miami. Tua has played very well this season overall, the Texans give up the 9th most points to quarterbacks in fantasy. If you need a quarterback, he is a nice plug and plays for Week 9.

Other Quarterbacks to consider: Teddy Bridgewater, Baker Mayfield, Mike White

Running Backs

Jeremy McNichols

With the news that Derrick Henry may be out for the rest of the season, McNichols is the next man up currently for the Titans. He had 3 receptions for 33 yards in week 9. The Titans may make a trade for someone to fill the void here. Right now, McNichols is the guy.

Boston Scott

At this time last week, almost everyone thought Kenneth Gainwell was the add at running back for the Eagles. Well, the Eagles coach staff has taught us the add was Boston Scott. Scott had 12 carries for 60 yards and 2 touchdowns in Week 8.

Carlos Hyde

James Robinson bruised his heel during the game in Week 8 and never returned. Carlos Hyde will start if Robinson cannot go in Week 9. In Week 8, Hyde had 6 receptions for 40 yards and 9 carries for another 32 yards.

Ty Johnson

Johnson has scored over 10 fantasy points in 0.5 PPR for three straight games. Primarily used in the passing game, the past two weeks he has seen 13 targets for 11 receptions, 136 yards, and a touchdown in total. If you are playing in points per reception I would make him an add.

Rex Burkhead

Everyone wondered who would pick up the sack for the Texans after they traded mark Ingram to the Saints. Burkhead answered that for us in Week 8. He has always been a player that does a little of everything. 21 yards and a touchdown rushing and another 3 receptions and 27 yards receiving. Miami is up next and they give up the 6th most points to running backs.

Other Running Backs to consider: Jordan Howard, Mark Ingram

Wide Receivers

Jamal Agnew

In the past three games, he has seen the following number of targets: 7, 6, and 12. The 12 targets in Week 8 were a 22% target share. The Bills are up next which will be tough but there a 3 straight relatively friendly weeks after that, with the Colts, Niners, and Falcons on the schedule.

Devante Parker

Came back in Week 8 and played very well with 8 receptions for 85 yards. He commanded a 28% target share in Week 8 as well. Parker looks ready to go the playoff schedule for him is very nice as well.

Van Jefferson

Jefferson has seen 6 targets in each of the last 2 games and scored double-digit fantasy points in each of those games. With Desean Jackson requesting out of LA, Jefferson is the clear-cut number 3 wide receiver on the team.

Other Wide Receivers to consider: Elijah Moore, Henry Ruggs, Hunter Renfrow, Jamison Crowder, Rashod Bateman

NOTE: I would seriously consider Quez about just as high as the three above. And his fantasy playoff schedule is crazy good.

Tight Ends

Pat Freiermuth

Pat has seen 7 targets in each of the last two games. He turned that into 4 receptions, 44 yards, and a touchdown in week 8. If you really need a tight end grab this one and hold on as his target share has increased dramatically since Juju got hurt. 20% target share in Week 8, which was the second-highest on the team

Dan Arnold

Arnold saw 10 targets and turned that into 8 receptions for 68 yards in Week 8. I am not super excited about Arnold next week against the Bills but it is what it is. He had a 19% target share in week 8 and that is tough for me to ignore.
