Untangling the Waiver Wire (Fantasy Football 2021 – Week 7)

The bye weeks are here, the bye weeks are here. That means even when we have a week that waivers don’t appear to have someone that everyone should be crazy over you may still want to be active in the waiver process, either to get what you need or sometimes to makes sure other teams don’t get what they need.

NOTE: If you are new around here this column refers to players rostered in under 50% of Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper Leagues.

Quarterbacks

Jameis Winston

Winston was mentioned in this column last week. That is because he has a very, and yes I mean VERY, soft schedule for weeks 7 through 9. Seattle, Tampa Bay and Atlanta are up the next three weeks and all are all bottom 10 in defending quarterbacks. In Week 4, Winston had 279 yards and 4 touchdowns. The schedule is so soft, squishy noises were made while I typed this.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tua has been out of action for the past three weeks but he came roaring back against a Jaguars defense that is somewhat middle of the pack against quarterbacks in fantasy. Tua passed for 329 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also ran for another 22 yards on 3 carries. In Week 8, he plays against the Bills but other than that he looks like a nice bye week fill in from Weeks 7 through 13.

Teddy Bridgewater

Bridgewater was also written about here last week. His next three weeks are soft as he has the Browns this week, WFT next week, and the Cowboys after that. Pick him up and snuggle this little Teddybear for three straight weeks. Feels good, doesn’t it?

Other quarterbacks to consider: Daniel Jones

Running Backs

J.D. McKissic

Antonio Gibson left the game on Sunday with an injury and McKissic found his way to total 45 yards rushing on 8 carries and another 65 yards receiving. If Gibson were to miss week 7, McKissic would see his increased usage continue.

Rhamondre Stevenson

The preseason darling finally got some run in Week 6. Stevenson saw 8 touches for a total of 63 yards and a touchdown in Week 6. He saw the third-most targets on the team with 3. He was the only other running back factoring into the Patriots game plan. Stevenson is worth a speculative add.

Chris Evans

With Joe Mixon’s ankle dinged up and Samaje Perine out with Covid Evans saw some usage in week 6. Evans had 4 carries for 18 yards and 3 receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown. 7 total touches are not awe-inspiring but if you are needy Evans is another speculative add.

Other running backs to consider: Devonta Freeman, Jaret Patterson

Wide Receivers

Donovan Peoples-Jones

Over the past two weeks, DPJ has seen 11 targets which he has turned into 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. He may be the best wide receiver on the Browns right now. If you need wide receiver help, I would consider giving DPJ an add as a plug-and-play.

Marquez Callaway

I wrote about Callaway here last week. In Week 5 before the Saints’ bye, Callaway had 4 receptions for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns. But I am more impressed with his 8 targets for a 27% target share. Only Alvin Kamara saw as many targets in Week 5 from Winston. Callaway looking like a nice add as one of the primary options for the Saints with that very soft schedule coming up. Callaway all the way.

Tim Patrick

Another guy I have written about multiple times yet no one is adding him. Patrick has double-digit fantasy points in 5 out of 6 weeks this season. Patrick is consistently targeted by Teddy Bridgewater and produces on those targets. In Week 6, he had 6 targets for 3 receptions, 42 yards, and a touchdown. The guy is a consistency king.

Other wide receivers to consider: AJ Green, Quez Watkins, Rashod Bateman

NOTE: I would seriously consider Quez about just as high as the three above. And his fantasy playoff schedule is crazy good.

Tight Ends

Ricky Seals-Jones

RSJ has literally just walked into all the targets vacated by Logan Thomas for the Washington Football Team. They just plugged him in as the direct backup and gave him all the targets. He has responded well with 4 receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown in week 6.
