Stockpiling the Iron Bank

Whether you’ve perfectly executed a startup draft by moving back for rookie draft capital or traded away veterans for young building blocks and assets, you have a head start on stockpiling what has been coined the “Iron Bank”.

The Iron Bank is a store of value of top dynasty assets which include elite players and future rookie draft picks. A storage of assets that can only appreciate in value and are (for the most part) immune to factors that negatively affect the value of those assets. Rookie draft picks, especially 1st round picks, are among the safest assets to own and are guaranteed to increase exponentially in value the closer you get to rookie drafts (see Chapter 6).

Key Characteristics of the Iron Bank

1. Safety and Stability
   • Immunity to Risks: Draft picks don’t get injured, lose their starting jobs, or face off-field issues. They are inherently stable compared to player assets.
   • Guaranteed Appreciation: The closer you get to the rookie drafts, the more valuable these picks become due to rookie fever.
2. Flexibility
   • Trading Power: Picks can be traded for elite veterans or additional draft capital, providing flexibility in roster construction.
   • Building Through the Draft: Alternatively, these picks can be used to add promising rookies to your team, ensuring a steady influx of young talent.

Strategic Acquisition of Rookie Picks

Whether a draft class is strong or weak, 1st round picks will always hold value and when a pick is on the clock, rookie fever inevitably reaches its peak. As I will later discuss, you can withdraw maximum trade values for picks during rookie drafts or add to your roster by making the picks following the Rookie Pick Cycle. Draft picks don’t get injured, lose their starting jobs, or don’t get publicly shamed/canceled. Consequently, draft picks are the safest asset to own and you always want to position yourself with as many appreciating assets as possible in dynasty fantasy football.

Trading is usually the quickest way to build a juggernaut roster but can also be a risky proposition if value is consistently lost in transactions. For example, many teams traded for James Robinson, giving up multiple draft picks in the process. If they were chasing a ship and were successful the point is moot. However, for those middling teams that just wanted to add depth or the next hyped player, they lost a decent amount of value in that transaction as time eventually proved. As we know, the Jaguars drafted Travis Etienne who has caused a dark cloud to loom over Robinson’s near and long-term fantasy prospects. I was bashed for trading JRob for a pair of 2022 2nds even though I knew my dynasty team would not compete last year.

The JRob move was risky but storing up iron assets for a quick reload has proved to be profitable, especially when I was able to snowball those picks during a recent rookie draft into more 2022 and 2023 picks. Now, I have the flexibility to either trade away those picks for elite veterans to make a title run or continue to build through rookie draft by trading or making picks. If you’re not a true contender, you need to recognize that and start building through Productive Struggle and Iron Bank principles. It’s all about the endgame and how you plan on getting there.

1. Timing Your Trades
   • Buy Low: Acquire rookie picks during the NFL season or well in advance when their perceived value is lower. This allows you to get them at a discount.
   • Sell High: Trade rookie picks during the peak of rookie fever, usually just before or during the rookie draft, to maximize return on investment.
2. Use Rookie Pick Cycles
   • Cycle Awareness: Understanding the rookie pick cycle helps you time your acquisitions and sales. Picks are cheapest during the season and most expensive during draft season.
   • Exploit Value Fluctuations: By buying picks when they are undervalued and selling when they are overvalued, you can consistently turn a profit

Building the Iron Bank

Getting picks more than a year out can be easily obtained as throw-ins for every trade you make. Today, many teams are looking to trade their 2022 and 2023 picks. Because you can argue that distant future picks are worth less due to time/value principles, 2023 rookie picks can be acquired at a discount and will undoubtedly skyrocket in value over the next year or so. By the time that class comes around in one or two years down the line, you will have accumulated an arsenal of rookie picks, allowing you to take complete control of that rookie draft. That is the ultimate goal of storing assets in the Iron Back – having a stockpile of 5 or 6 1st round picks accompanied by multiple 2nds.

   • Startup Draft Strategy: In your startup draft, trade back to accumulate as many mid-round picks and future draft picks as possible. This sets the foundation for your Iron Bank.
   • Trading Veterans: If your team is not in immediate contention, trade away aging veterans for rookie picks and younger players with upside.

Knowing When to Chase the Ship

Evaluating your team midseason is crucial for making an honest assessment of your chances of contending for a title. If you are not a legitimate top 3 contender in your league, then there is little point in chasing a title that season unless you are relying on luck. While luck plays a role in fantasy football, strategic preparation can significantly increase your chances of success. As Oscar Wilde once put it, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

By understanding when you have a legitimate shot at a title, you can put yourself in a position to win that championship. If you have methodically constructed a strong roster using redraft principles and a win-now mentality (see Chapter 2), then you should have positioned yourself for a deep playoff run. That’s when you trade enticing youthful pieces for well-established, reliable veterans who can put you over the top. Throwing in future rookie draft picks is also an option if you are confident that you can make a real run at the title as a top 3 contender. But also remember that you should be wary of mortgaging your future just to contend. There needs to be a high level of confidence that this is your chance to strike if you are going to trade away future rookie draft picks. There is nothing worse than to go all out only to fall short and not have enough assets to reload for the next season. When the next rookie draft comes around and you have no picks, you will be tempted to start trading away players for picks. This leads to endless frustration, disappointment, and broken teams. Shoot your shot but make sure you have a high probability of success.

Midseason Assessment

1. Evaluate Your Standing
   • Top 3 Contender: Assess whether you are a top 3 contender in your league based on your team’s performance, point totals, and roster strength.
   • Honest Appraisal: Be realistic about your chances. If you are not a top contender, it may be better to plan for the future.

   • Strengths and Weaknesses: Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your team. Look at positional depth, consistency of scoring, and injury history.

If you determine that you are a strong contender, it’s time to make strategic moves to bolster your roster for a championship run.

1. Trade for Proven Veterans
   • Reliable Performers: Target well-established, reliable veterans who can provide consistent production.
   • Youth for Experience: Consider trading youthful pieces and future rookie picks for proven assets. These veterans can be the difference-makers in critical playoff matchups.
2. Manage Future Assets
   • Calculated Risks: If you decide to trade away future rookie picks, ensure you have a high level of confidence in your championship chances. The worst scenario is to go all out, fall short, and lack the assets to reload for the next season.
   • Balance: Avoid completely mortgaging your future. Maintain some future assets to keep your team competitive beyond the current season.

Productive Struggle

If you are not truly a contender, you are better off stockpiling the Iron Bank (more on that in Chapter 5) and collecting draft capital. But there is a delicate balance. If you are not a strong contender, it does not mean you should just sell off all of your players and go in a full rebuild. Tearing down your entire roster is risky and many teams that go into a full rebuild mode usually don’t make it back. There is a better way to “rebuild” in a productive manner. You need to have a firm strategy and plan in place with a clear vision of how you are going to rebuild.

If you find yourself in mediocrity or not truly in title contention, then it may be time to start building using the Productive Struggle blueprint created by Ryan McDowell. This blueprint works best if you have stocked your team with young building blocks and future draft capital. You may “tank” for a season by trading off aging veterans for rookie picks and young players but you are essentially building for the future with a specific plan in place. The idea behind the Productive Struggle is to build an evergreen roster that will compete for a title every year, even as your team ages and players come and go. So, if you’re not a top 3 contender, look to move off aging proven veterans for younger assets and draft capital while keeping your young building blocks.
